Did you know?
Kids can lose up to 3 months of school progress over summer if they don't have a chance to practice their reading skills.
Studies show that reading as few as 6 books during the holidays can help maintain reading levels.
Here are some tips for keeping children engaged in books this summer:
1. Be a model. Children who observe their parents reading are more likely to become eager readers themselves.
2. Give kids time to read. Summer schedules can be jam-packed. Be sure to set aside time for reading.
3. Use the Library. Make sure your child has a library card. Get more information at www.gppl.ab.ca
4. Match books with interests. Does your child like cooking, animals, history, sports, fantasy, or just joking around?
5. Choose a magazine, story, or graphic novel with these in mind.
6. Read out-loud. Read together. Encourage kids to read to a younger sibling. Pick a story and alternate reading. Make it a time to remember.
Don't know which books to choose? They can be from the library, your own collection, or here's a list of childrens' books available at Salemstorehouse.com
