What if the most important thing you do after a fire is plant a seed?
I recently learned about a pair of border collies in Chile that help restore forests after wildfires. Their owners outfit them with special pouches filled with native seeds, and as the dogs run through the charred landscape, they scatter the seeds. In a single day, they can travel up to 30 kilometres and spread 10 kilograms of seed.
They don't wait until the land looks healthy again. They plant seeds while the ground is still blackened.
When disappointment, grief, failure, or loss leaves you feeling scorched, it's tempting to wait for things to feel better before we start again. But God has already given you seeds of hope, faith and courage - and healing often begins when we plant right in the middle of the ashes.
Even when it all feels like dust, you have what you need to thrive after the fire - to rebuild and flourish once again.
Those dogs aren't expected to regrow an entire forest, just to lay down the seeds they've been given.
After all, every forest begins with a single seed—and every comeback begins with the courage to plant one.
