This isn't just a great leadership quote, it applies to anyone who serves a greater vision.
“Play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back.”
Herb Brooks, who coached the US Olympic hockey team in 1980, was inspiring his players that they are a team.
It isn’t about position or spotlight. When we focus on the name on the back, we chase credit, recognition, and being noticed. But when we play for the name on the front, something shifts. We ask, Who am I representing? Who benefits if I do this well? The team. The family. The country. The workplace.
You belong to something bigger than yourself. What you do and how you do it matters because it contributes to a shared outcome.
Parent, employee, volunteer, student, Christian, neighbour, or friend.
When you play for the front of the jersey, regardless of role - when you choose to show up, serve well and do the right thing even when no one is watching - everyone wins.
