December's Ministry of the Month is Mission Aviation Fellowship of Canada, assisting Christian and humanitarian organizations by providing the world's largest fleet of private aircrafts to support those serving the physical and spiritual needs of isolated people groups.

Sharing God's love through aviation and technology. Vision Ministering to isolated people groups to bring physical and spiritual transformation in Christ’s name. DID YOU KNOW?
Mission Aviation Fellowship is a worldwide team of specialists meeting the transportation and communication needs of hundreds of overseas missions, relief and development organizations, as well as local churches serving those living in the poorest and most remote parts of the world.
More than 1,000 missionary staff families including roughly 50 Canadians and their families, perform specialized tasks which aid the ministries of local churches and relief and development agencies through aviation.
Mission Aviation Fellowship’s Christian pilots are busy delivering food, doctors and mission workers on a regular basis to the aid of suffering rural people in developing countries – and flights are also available for emergencies.
Mission Aviation Fellowship’s pilots and mechanics operate and maintain a fleet of more than 130 aircraft - flying in and out of some 2,500 airstrips around the world.
Wisdom, good judgment and discernment is always needed by MAF pilots – landing strips are often short and in mountainous areas that are often steep; and there can be communities of unrest such as Papua New Guinea, or Madagascar.
MAF helps to bring both traditional postal-mail and modern e-mail access where none has been possible before. In countries such as Indonesia, the alternative for missionaries to a 35-minute flight might be seven days of hiking through mountain passes and thick jungle swamps with supplies strapped onto their backs.
Mission Aviation Fellowship History
At the end of World War II several Christian military airmen, encouraged by missionary George Fisk, sought to combine their religious faith and their love of flying by using the airplane to reach out in Christian love to isolated people.
In 1945, pilots in Australia, the UK and the United States formed Missionary Aviation Fellowship. It was in 1946 when MAF officially began operations into Latin America with Betty Greene piloting the inaugural flight to Mexico.
Throughout the late 1940s and into the early 1950s, MAF began ministering throughout Africa, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.
In 1956, MAF made headlines through the tragic deaths of five missionaries (including MAF pilot Nate Saint) while trying to bring the news of God’s love to the Waorani tribe in Ecuador, South America.
Mission Aviation Fellowship of Canada was formed in 1972 to serve the growing number of Canadians working with MAF projects worldwide.
The work of MAF in providing support to relief and development organizations proved invaluable during the disastrous earthquakes, hurricanes, and famines of the 1980s. During this time, MAF began using larger aircraft like the Twin Otter and the Beech 99.
In 1989, MAF Canada began using a Cessna Caravan in a new work in the drought stricken and war-torn African country of Angola.
Today, MAF is a global ministry partnership, serving the aviation needs of over 35 countries with head offices in Australia, Canada, Europe, South Africa, and the United States.
Every three minutes, somewhere in the world, an MAF plane takes off or lands, covering more distance in six hours than David Livingstone did in his entire 28 years as a missionary in Africa.
Real Stories, Real People
Medivac in East Timor: Six-year-old Selestina needed to get to a hospital – and get there fast. Deadly cerebral malaria and pneumonia combined to threaten her young life. Only an emergency flight could deliver her to a hospital at the speed needed for treatment to be effective. By road the trip would have taken seven difficult hours over rough and mountainous terrain during the heavy, wet season rains. MAF was able to get Selestina and her anxious father there in only 30 minutes.
Weather is a constant challenge for MAF pilots who fly to some of the most isolated parts of the world. During the rainy season, they negotiate their way through heavy clouds and then land on the soft soil at unpaved airstrips. In dry weather, they might have high winds and dust storms to deal with. Canadian pilot Kalvin Hildebrandt (of Abbotsford, BC) provides MAF flights on the edge of the Sahara Desert in support of medical clinics, Bible translators and the local pastors. Earlier this year, a heavy dust storm forced him to land and wait overnight until conditions cleared up. For him, it was another night spent away from his wife and four children. Please pray for Kalvin and all pilots who are dedicated to MAF service despite having to deal with dust storms, canyon winds or heavy rains.
Piece of MAF Aircraft Goes Into Space – Astronaut Patrick Forrester took a piece of Mission Aviation Fellowship’s history with him on his flight aboard the Space Shuttle “Discovery” this past August (Aug. 28, 2009). He brought along the battery box from the airplane that the late MAF pilot Nate Saint flew in Ecuador in the 1950s when he and four other missionaries were martyred in Ecuador in 1956. Forrester asked MAF to provide a part of the plane for the shuttle mission in order to highlight the importance of missionary work. Forrester has been with NASA for 16 years. He says: “When I visualize what I might do after I end my career at NASA, always in the back of my mind is going into the mission field in some way. If I could go tomorrow and be a pilot with an organization like MAF, I think that’s what I’d do.”
We’re living at a time in history when there are an increasing number of barriers to Christian ministry, and the MAF staff could give plenty of examples. Everywhere in the world, there are political, economic, and spiritual strongholds. At the same time, however, this is also a time of tremendous victory because countless thousands are learning about Jesus Christ for the first time and inviting him into their lives. And: God is equipping ministries that are prepared to work where He is at work. MAF goes out into the world to tell people about Jesus and to show them Jesus through such actions as delivering food, doctors, school teachers and missionaries to meet physical and spiritual needs.
At the MAF head office in Guelph, Ontario, the 12 staff members who make up the home staff see prayer as their highest calling. They gather together for prayer each morning, knowing that God is the One who makes the ministry of MAF possible in our day.
The home staff is involved with fundraising and support for the 50 Canadian pilots, aircraft mechanics and school teachers who are serving with MAF overseas. Because MAF missionaries take their families along with them to live overseas in a new country, the home office is also there to provide practical help for these families such as securing visas, schooling and health care.
Some families will stay for one term, which is 42 months (3-1/2 years), but others might stay as long as 42 years. All have sensed God’s calling to serve, knowing that they are likely to have a more difficult life overseas than they might have had in Canada.

What Does It Take To Be A Pilot With MAFC?
What does it take to be a pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship? MAF looks for believers in Jesus Christ who have a sure sense of God’s calling to ministry work overseas. Most pilots will have had a Bible college education, in addition to at least 1,000 hours of flight experience in Canada, before they are considered for MAF service overseas. Flying with MAF is challenging, even for experienced pilots, because most airstrips are unpaved – typically grass or gravel – and many are steeply sloped. Pilots and their spouses must also be able to learn a language other than English, and be willing to live in a culture where there may be few of the comforts of home. MAF is always looking for more pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers.
