The Inspirational True Story of Hockey Star Mike Fisher Is Illuminated in a New Book by Kim Washburn
When NHL great Mike Fisher, 31, exchanged vows with country singer Carrie Underwood, he was transformed from star hockey player to global celebrity.
But in Kim Washburn's DEFENDER OF FAITH: The Mike Fisher Story, tween readers will discover a different side of the athlete, a side certain to inspire and touch their hearts.
Washburn, who last year penned the true story of rock icon Bono in Breaking Through by Grace, delivers the moving, true story of Fisher's rise to fame and how he became the man and role model athlete he is today.
As Washburn recounts in DEFENDER OF FAITH, Ontario-born Fisher made a name for himself as a star player for the Ottawa Senators and this past season with the Nashville Predators, played in the Stanley Cup finals, faced major debilitating injuries and setbacks on and off the ice, and through it all, Fisher never batted an eye. His faith always remained number one.
Even when his celebrity status reached its peak, both professionally and personally, Fisher remained grounded, something his teammates and coaches have always admired.
"You think of the highlights, like getting your first goal or your first win, and you think, that's neat," Fisher told Washburn. "But I know the most important thing for me is having my faith."
Not that Fisher's faith was never tested, Washburn shares.
As a pro player and twenty-something star in a pop culture-obsessed industry, Mike faced pressure to be something he wasn't, and he got netted into the notorious party scene once or twice.
